Steps to Assurance

Ok…so I started this blog mostly to talk about Emma…but I also intended to speak freely about my faith and witness to whomever decided to stop by and check out my blog. I have done that a little bit…but not nearly enough as I should. In the middle of the night last night I had this thought to type up the Steps to Assurance that I carry around with me being a BSF leader…just in case somebody had a question for me. So…here they are. I am typing these up just because…if you read them and actually accept Christ…Yay!!! And be sure to let me know. I would love to know that I was a part of God’s plan in somebody coming to know Him personally….

Have you ever, as a definite event in your life, received Jesus as your Savior?
Ephesians 2:8-9

Have you ever thanked the Lord Jesus because He died for your sins on the Cross?
Colossians 1:21-22

To be sure about your relationship to Christ…
Know that God made you and keeps you. Without Him you would have nothing. He decides what is right and wrong because He is holy, perfect and pure. He is God Almighty. He made you in His image so that you could worship, honor, relate to, and delight in Him. God has authority over your life, and you are responsible to reflect God.
Psalm 100:3
Acts 17:24-31

Admit to yourself and to God that you are a sinner. You have ignored God and wanted to control your own life. You have disobeyed or disregarded God’s law. You have wanted to decide for yourself what is right and wrong. The consequences of your sin are physical and spiritual death because of God’s wrath toward you.
Romans 3:10-12
Romans 3:20
Romans 3:23
James 2:10

Confess your sins and, as much as possible, name them specifically.
Psalm 139:23-24
1 John 1:8-10

Believe that Christ went to the Cross for you, taking your guilt upon Himself and enduring God’s judgment in your place. This means that God has forgiven your sins and you are justified (pardoned and cleared from guilt) in God’s sight.
Isaiah 53:5-6
1 Peter 2:24
Romans 5:8-9
John 5:24
John 14:6
Acts 4:12

Believe that Christ rose from the dead, conquering sin and death, and that He ascended to the Father in heaven to reign as Lord. This means that Jesus is alive today to help you live a new life that is pleasing to God.
Acts 2:22-24, 36
Romans 6:4
Acts 1:9-10
Ephesians 2:1-10

Would you like to receive Jesus Christ as your Savior from sin and Lord of your life? If so, would you pray right now? Perhaps you would like to kneel and pray (Philippians 2:10). This position helps to give a sense of reverent nearness to God. You can pray aloud to Him with words from your heart, or you might want to pray this prayer:

O God, I know I have sinned. I have not obeyed your Word. I have tried to run my own life, ignoring you and your will for me. I have tried to decide for myself what is right and wrong. I know I deserve your wrath and punishment and that I am lost unless you save me. I thank you for sending the Lord Jesus Christ to pay for my sin and guilt. I thank you for raising Him from the dead and giving Him authority over my life. I receive Him as my Savior and Lord. I receive your free gift of eternal life in Christ. I will turn from my sinful life to serve you, my Creator and Redeemer.

Continue your prayer by telling God what you are thinking and feeling.

Trust (be assured) that having received Christ into your life, you are sealed with God’s Holy Spirit and stamped with God’s name on you. You may or may not “feel” different, but you don’t need to. Your trust is not based on your feelings but on the authority of the Word of God and His promises to you.
John 1:12-13
2 Corinthians 5:17
2 Corinthians 1:21-22
1 Corinthians 6:19-20
1 John 5:12-13

If you made it this far in the reading…good for you! And remember…if you actually did these steps above…please let me know!!

In His strength,
Emily

Many thanks! I am in BSF and also lead a class at my church. I have the opportunity in our lesson tomorrow to give a gospel presentation. I immediately thought of Steps to Assurance, but could not find my copy. My gospel presentation will be much clearer thanks to your thought to post Steps to Assurance here. Only God knows what the eternal result might be.

Thanks. I was looking for something more to do during the summer months and my break from BSF. I thought putting together Steps to Assurance with the verses embedded would more prepare me to share God's Plan. I found your blog when I searched on Steps to Assurance. Thanks for your efforts and outreach. You saved me a boatload of typing.

The Holy Spirit put it on my heart that although I have been walking with the Lord since youth (I am now 32) sadly, I do not feel confident enough in leading an unbeliever through the steps to receiving salvation. I received the steps to assurance in BSF (BSF is awesome by the way!!!!) but I have not taken the time to memorize them and memorize the scripture references to support them. I was unable to locate where I put my Steps to Assurance sheet from BSF so I did a google search and alas your website came up. So, in my quiet time for as long as it takes, I have committed to learning these important steps. Thank you for posting this. I look forward to seeing who the Lord puts in my path with whom I can confidently share the Gospel. :)

Thanks Emily, for putting this up! Just a while ago, I read this bunch of testimonies about their trips to hell (http://www.heavenvisit.com/7_Columbians_Hell.php) and it made me really scared and made me question if I was really saved and on my way to heaven or not. i learnt about the steps to assurance from BSF and I wanted to assure myself through them. I thank you for putting this up because even though I haven't felt any change, I now know with full assurance that Christ is in me and that I'm going to heaven!
Thanks again!
Yours in Christ,
Caleb

Thank you so much for this valuable document. I used it to witness to my brother who is living by himself on a small ranch in Taos, New Mexico and battling with advanced bone cancer and prostate cancer. He has lived a lonely life and I cannot bear to think of him going into eternity without Jesus. I pray that he reads these steps and prays to accept Jesus into his heart. I had him on my heart this very night and your typed version of the Steps of Assurance allowed me to reach out to him immediately. So thank you very much.
